The route to K2 base camp took us through wonderful mountain country and past remote nomad Uighur shepherding camps then up the mighty Shaksgam River which drains the north side of the Karakorum range. Having been driven from Kashgar to Yecheng and then over the Kun Lun mountains to the start of the trail, we met our Bactrian camels and camel drivers and headed into the mountains.   Much of the Kashgar market in 1990 was almost medieval - people making tools and utensils on small anvils and lathes, and this man bending thin strips of wood over a purpose-made brazier to create steaming baskets or sieves. My book on the 1990 expedition to the North Ridge of K2 includes the wonderful experience of the old markets in the Silk Road capital of Kashgar in China's Xinjiang province which I believe have largely disappeared with the modernisation of the city.
